Now psychologist Janine Spencer of Brunel University, has compiled 22 key skills, based on government advice, that every parent should teach pre-school offspring. Dr Spencer explains them here:

 Write their own name

 Take turns and share

 Use a computer

 Be sensitive to others' feelings

 Dress and feed themselves

Join in group activities with other children

Make up stories (even if they make no sense)

 Complete activities on their own

Join in general conversation at home

Focus their attention on one thing for a prolonged period

 Count and answer number-based questions

Tell the difference between past and future

 Ask lots of questions

 Differentiate between groups

 Do a jigsaw
